A computer is a general purpose electronic device that performs a specified sequence of operations as per the set of instructions (known as programs) given on a set of data (input) to generate desired information (output).

Digital Computer : Which uses the binary number system, Digital computer does not measure the continuous data for continuous output.

Analog Computer :  An analog computer can perform arithmetical operations by using some variable physical quantity (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, etc).

Hybrid Computer :  is the combination of analog and digital computer system.

COMPUTER ON THE BASIS OF SPEED


1) Personal computers - It is a single user computer system having moderately powerful
microprocessor

2) WorkStation -  It is also a single user computer system which is similar to personal
computer but have more powerful microprocessor.

3) Mini Computer - It is a multi-user computer system which is capable of supporting
hundreds of users simultaneously.

4) Main Frame - It is a multi-user computer system which is capable of supporting
hundreds of users simultaneously.

5) Supercomputer - It is an extremely fast computer which can execute hundreds of
millions of instructions per second.

1st generation computers: (1940-1956) based on Vacuum tubes.
2nd generation computers: (1956-1963) based on Transistors
3rd generation computers: (1964-1971) based on Integrated Circuits (IC)
4th generation computers: (1971- Present) Based on Microprocessors (VLSI)
5th generation computers: (Present and Beyond) based on Artificial Intelligence (ULSI)
